Crochet Baby Turban Pattern

May 5, 2014 by Jessica 25 Comments

After first seeing a crocheted baby turban via Pinterest, I just knew I had to make one for Ella Rose. I reviewed several hat patterns, and eventually created one of my own that resulted in a stylish mini turban that is too cute for words.

This hat requires only basic crochet stitches, and works up fairly quickly. It makes for a great baby shower gift, or if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to make it in about 100 different colors for your own little one.
I’m sharing the pattern in size 0-3 months.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook
Yarn needle
Stitches:
ch (chain)
hdc (half double crochet)
sl st (slip stitch)
Pattern:
ch 3, join with sl st to create ring
Rnd 1- ch 1, 10 hdc in center of ring, join to sl st into first hdc (10 hdc)
Rnd 2- ch 1, 2 hdc in each stitch around, join with sl st into first hdc (20 hdc)
Rnd 3- ch 1, *1 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around, join with sl st (30 hdc)
Rnd 4- ch 1, *1 hdc in each of first 2 st, 2 hdc in the next. Repeat from * around, join with sl st (40 hdc)
Rnd 5-  ch 1, *1 hdc in each of the first 9 st, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around, join with sl st (44 hdc)
Rnd 6- ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, through front loop only (44 hdc)
Rnd 7- ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, through back loop only (44 hdc)
Repeat rounds 6 and 7 each 4 times (4 ribs), for a total of 15 rounds.
Tie off and weave in ends.
Thread yarn needle with approximately 12 inches of yarn, wrap yarn from top of first rib to edge of hat, about 12 times, and pull tight. Tie off and weave in ends.

Love the pattern! What is your gauge?

Thank you Dara! For gauge, I got 4 hdc= 1 inch. The finished hat measures approximately 5 inches in height, and about 13-14 inches in circumference. If you wanted it to be slightly bigger, you could always try a size I hook!

Hi! Sorry to comment off someone else’s comment, but have you ever figured out for adult or children’s sizes?? Thank you in advance!

Thanks, that is super helpful since I don't have a newborn around right now! Also, I noticed that if rows 6-7 are repeated four times, there should be a total of 15 rounds, not 13.

However, that gives 5 ribs. So should they be repeated 3 times for 4 ribs (13 rows)? Or 4 times for 5 ribs (15 rows)?

I have made some edits, I think the way I wrote it was a little confusing. Hopefully it's correct now, however, I have to admit, chasing a toddler around he having a newborn have made my brain a little foggy.

I have a question. 🙂 If you want to make an adult size what do you do?

      Hi Lesley,
I haven't had time to work out an adult pattern for this hat style, but I found this link on Pinterest:

    HI Jessica,
I am making a baby turban hat and I just want to be sure about round 6.
Do you mean to work in the front loops only?
This is such a cute pattern! Thanks!

I tried round 6 through both loops but decided to do the front loop instead, after I found out that it looked better overall. Thanks for getting back to me and confirming it with me. This is such a cute pattern! Thank you again! 🙂

Hi! I like your pattern, it’s very cute! Can I sell hats online that I make with your pattern if I give you credit for the pattern?

OMG! How stinkin’ cute! I just knocked one of these off to see how it worked up for me. I’ll have to use a softer baby yarn, but I will be making 3 little turbans for my triplet great-nieces, due to make their appearance in January 2020.

So excited to make this pattern, I am making them to send to african mothers who can’t afford the supplies to make their own.

Quick question I want to make this up for toddlers as well as babies, would I just repeat round 4 and increase 1 hdc in 3 st to make 50, then do round 5 to slightly increase to 54?

Would that be a good size for a toddler?

And how would you go about making this for say a 6-9mo or a 9-12 mo baby?

We are sending a lot of beanies over to Tanzania so I would like to make up a few different sizes.

Thanks, and thanks so much for the cute pattern.
    God bless

    Selina
